At Houston Habitat for Humanity we know that decent, affordable housing helps build strong, stable families. Each day Houston Habitat homeowners are improving the lives of their children through a secure home and bright financial outlook.
José was just 11 years old when he learned his family was going to purchase a Houston Habitat home. “I was so excited at first because I was going to have my own room. I would get to be there and I would get to cut the grass and actually have space to move around.”
José really wanted to help his family contribute to the home. Although he was too young to work on the build site, he would help by providing water bottles and tools to the volunteers.
His family’s new affordable house was located in a neighborhood with other new Habitat homeowners. For José the benefits of living in a home within a tight knit community were abundant. He made lifelong friends and thrived in school. “We all grew up together. As of now, we are all attending University of Houston downtown or main campus.”
Going to college is not the only goal José has accomplished. “I am actually a homeowner. I started my journey a year ago. I made it happen. With all of the struggles and everything I pushed through. And now I am finally a homeowner in the same community that all of my family and friends are. It’s awesome.”
While education is an excellent benefit to the stability of owning a home, “there’s nothing like having family and friends there the entire time you’re growing up.”
Houston Habitat for Humanity builds more than homes; we build communities that thrive.
